Review: Who Is God?

** this giveaway is now closed** Winner: Sandpiper

Perhaps my eleven-year-old son, in beyond-his-years wisdom, drafted my review in one reflection.

“If we don’t see the world through a biblical worldview, how can we help others to?”

Building a sound biblical worldview with your children creates a powerful, multi-generational legacy. Have you addressed theories other than creationism in science? Have you studied conflicts of religion and liberty in history? Through what lens does your child evaluate differing/opposing points of view in each learning discipline?

We all filter information and experiences based on truths we already know. Much of this evaluation happens automatically if our belief systems are well-established. Apologia’s new four-volume series, What We Believe, by John Hay and David Webb is a powerful resource in constructing a sound, intellectual, biblical worldview with your children.

“All people wear a pair of ‘belief glasses’ to help them make sense of their lives and the world. if their beliefs are true, then the glasses they wear are like clear ones that provide a focused or true view of life and the world.”

Characteristic of Apologia’s existing curricula, the What We Believe series is designed to be self-guided for children reading independently. The lessons are engaging with frequent conversational prompts for reflection and lots of sidebars full of interesting activities ranging from simple illustrative experiments, to recipes, to world landmarks. (My boys were quickly drawn to the camping story and the oh-so-temptingly photographed S’Mores Clusters recipe! ) While this is one beautiful journey of discovery I want to travel with my children, the activities and stories were so inviting my five-year-old curled up with my eleven-year-old to continue reading and exploring page after page!

Who Is God? has ten lessons and a suggested, but entirely flexible, lesson plan which would span 20 three-day weeks. Lessons address thought-provoking questions such as “If God Created the World, Why Isn’t It Perfect?” and “Why Does Sin Keep Me From Knowing God?”.

Whether your family loves notebooking or hasn’t a clue what notebooking entails, this series provides multiple levels of notebooking opportunities which can be tailored to your students’ learning styles. Among the online extras provided with each volume, you will find notebooking templates and prompts for each lesson. Also, at the turn of nearly every page of the book are “Make a Note of It” prompts for journaling personal reflections and life application.

Complete lesson plans are offered online which provide an overview of each component of the lesson, discussion prompts, further Scripture references, as well as suggested activities and reading. In addition, you will find links to recommended study aids.

Volume One Who Is God? (Biblical Worldview of God and Truth) is solidly underway in our home. Volume Two Who Am I? (Biblical Worldview of Self-Image) is without question being ordered for the fall! (Note that some retailers are currently offering up to 35% discounts on Apologia resources!) Volumes Three and Four addressing servanthood and stewardship are slated for publication in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
