Teens and the Bible in 90 Days

Last January, I took on the task of reading the  Bible in 90 Days for the second year in a row. God gave me a huge burden to lead others in this life-changing challenge, so I took it to my church’s youth group. What began as a burden from the Lord blossomed into 25 students and staff meeting weekly for encouragement and accountability.

Many would ask, why teenagers? Aren’t they self-centered, inattentive, and worldly? Some are, but so are many adults. I felt led to bring this to the youth because they are some of the brightest, most passionate people that I know. Their whole lives are ahead of them.

It took me 38 years to get around to reading the entire Bible, and to do it in 90 days was like shining a huge light on my faith, pulling it together and tying the loose ends up. The entire package was tangible and made sense to me. I wanted them to get that same understanding that it took me 38 years to get around to discovering.

Of the 25, 21 completed the reading on time (give or take a few days), and TWO of them were 12 year olds!

I asked my students why they think you and your teens should consider taking on this challenge, and here is what they said:

Garrett (17): It put a lot of challenge on my devotions time. After reading the Bible for an hour for straight up 3 months, you will soon feel like you can do more, like study what you just read. :D

Quin (18): Discipline and dedication. It’s a lot easier to stick with reading your Bible when you have a goal and a support group.

Jordan (19):  It opens your eyes to the whole picture that God had planned. From the garden to the cross and to today.

Jessica (16): It creates a better understanding of the Bible.
Mya (16): A teen should read the Bible in 90 Days because it pulls you closer to God in ways that can only be done by doing this. And it tests your faithfulness, because Chronicles is ridiculous! :) lol

It pulls you closer to God in ways that can only be done by doing this.  It’s true.  When you read the entire Bible at the average pace that most kids read the latest popular novel series, it brings you closer to God. You will get the big picture of God’s plan for mankind in one steady flow that, especially once the last page of Revelation is turned, makes sense. When you are 12 or 16 or 19 and you get this huge challenge accomplished, you know that you CAN know God intimately. You CAN understand the Bible.  You CAN study and make the time to do it.  When you’re 38 this is an epiphany. When you’re 18 it is a lifestyle.

I am beginning the Bible in 90 Days challenge again on Wednesday, January 3rd. I pray that your family will consider spending 90 days soaking in the Word as well.
